Herbert Smith Freehills partner Juliana Warner has been elected Councillor for the New South Wales Law Society where she will help shape the future of the legal profession on a range of issues, including diversity and inclusion.

The Herbert Smith Freehills Sydney office Managing Partner will serve in the role for three years, effective immediately. Juliana recently completed a six month term filling a casual Councillor vacancy.

“I’m delighted and honoured to have been elected by my peers in the NSW legal fraternity and will work hard to ensure a strong, proactive Law Society that provides a high level of service to all members, targeted to their varying needs,” Juliana said.

“As a Councillor I want to ensure the Law Society provides leadership on reform issues, including the national profession reforms, and helps lawyers implement these changes. I also want to see the Society play a key role on issues important to the profession, including prospects for young lawyers, the changing nature of legal practice and factors that impact on practice viability.”

The commercial disputes lawyer has been with the firm for more than 25 years and is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion.

“Much has been achieved when it comes to diversity and inclusion since I began my career in the law but issues still remain and the Law Society has an important role to play. I aim to be a key contributor,” Juliana said.

“Mental health and wellbeing are also key concerns for the legal profession and I am committed to addressing these issues and supporting lawyer resilience.

“Another area I want to focus on is enhancing the reputation of the profession in the community. The Law Society has a vital role in promoting the important contribution the profession makes to the community through enhancing access to justice, engaging in pro bono activities and informing public debate on law reform.”

Sue Gilchrist, Herbert Smith Freehills’ Joint Regional Managing Partner of Asia and Australia congratulated Juliana on her election.

“Juliana is an outstanding representative for the legal profession and will be a valuable asset to the Law Society. Her leadership skills, energy and expertise will help drive positive changes for the profession and her peers,” Sue said.
