Matthew is a senior associate in the firm's dispute resolution division in Melbourne.

Experience

Matthew advises a wide range of corporate clients in complex commercial disputes. Matthew has a particular focus on regulatory and contractual-related disputes being resolved by litigation and other forms of dispute resolution such as mediation, as well as class actions. He has experience advising clients in the energy sector, as well within financial services, healthcare, mining, telecommunications and consumer products.

Matthew's experience includes acting for and advising:

  • the shareholders of Optal in an expedited claim (in the first case of its kind in the UK) in the English Commercial Court relating sale of the business where the buyer sought to rely on the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic as a MAE
  • a number of financial services companies and banks on responding to, and the scope of, notices issued by regulators such as the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission and the Australian Taxation Office
  • AusNet Services in relation to two bushfire class actions in Victoria, Australia
  • Metcash in its successful defence of injunction proceedings brought by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission seeking to block the company’s acquisition of a rival supermarket business
  • companies operating in the nuclear power industry, the Australian energy generation sector and the Dutch telecommunications sector for breaches of warranties and/or misleading and deceptive conduct
  • a major Australian telecommunications company in relation to a dispute with a government agency concerning the provision of outsourced telecommunications services
  • a number of target companies being acquired by bidders pursuant to schemes of arrangement in the Supreme Court of Victoria
  • a number of owners of gas pipelines and oil fields on matters such as loss suffered as a result of operations at another pipeline, and payment obligations under transport and processing agreements

 

 

Background

Matthew has worked across the firm’s Melbourne, Sydney and London offices, and has recently relocated to Melbourne after completing a long-term secondment in London.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce from Monash University, Victoria, and was awarded the Supreme Court of Victoria Prize for Best Honours Student. He also holds a Master of Law (Class I) from the University of Cambridge.

Matthew is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and is admitted to practice in Australian federal courts. He has also served as an Associate to the Honourable Justice K M Hayne AC of the High Court of Australia.
