Lara leads the pro bono practice for the UK, US, EMEA.

Experience

Lara leads the practice in the design and supervision of pro bono projects which make best use of the firm’s expertise, resources and leadership to promote equal access to justice and opportunity.

Prior to assuming her current role Lara was a key contributor to the firm's pro bono practice: representing asylum seekers before the Asylum Support Appeals Project; setting up a letter writing clinic for the AIRE Centre; advising homeless young people as part of a joint project with a key client and a homelessness charity; and acting for NGOs on a range of interventions in the Supreme Court.

She brings considerable experience from her time as a litigator to the role, having advised clients on a range of high profile commercial disputes, judicial reviews, statutory inquiries and procurement cases.

Lara's experience includes advising:

  • The Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH intervening in the a judicial review in the Supreme Court challenging the Prime Minister's decision to advise HM The Queen to prorogue Parliament for an exceptional length of time
  • The Advice on Individual Rights in Europe Centre in various interventions including in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal in cases involving the application of EU and ECHR law
  • Bail for Immigration Detainees in relation to a Supreme Court intervention 
  • Client in relation to the statutory inquiry into child sexual abuse
  • Client in relation to high profile judicial review 
  • HS2 in two separate procurement cases brought by train manufacturers
  • Goldman Sachs International in a US$1.2 billion claim brought by the Libyan Investment Authority in relation to a series of equity derivative transactions, featuring allegations of undue influence and unconscionable bargain
 

 

Background

Lara trained with Herbert Smith Freehills and qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2013 and a solicitor advocate in 2015.
