Kate is an experienced disputes lawyer with a focus on regulatory investigations and enforcement proceedings.

Kate is an experienced commercial litigator with specialist expertise in contentious regulatory matters. She has worked closely with several large financial institutions, including as in-house counsel at several major Australian banks and insurers.

Kate has acted in large-scale commercial litigation in the mining, technology and media sectors and has worked as both a prosecutor for the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and a criminal defence lawyer.

 

Background

Kate has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Technology (UTS) and a Master of Laws from the University of New South Wales. She is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia.

Prior to her career in law, Kate worked as a journalist in Australia and the UK.

  • advising a major bank in their response to the Financial Services Royal Commission and various regulatory investigations arising;
  • advising a large general insurer in relation to their responses to the Natural Disasters Royal Commission and a large-scale ongoing regulatory investigation;
  • advising an individual in criminal proceedings for insider trading and associated proceedings under Proceeds of Crime legislation;
  • assisting the Office of the Royal Commission into the Detention and Protection of Children in the Northern Territory;
  • acting for an international mining company in a multi-billion dollar contract dispute in the Supreme Court of Queensland; and
  • acting for Google Inc in misleading and deceptive conduct proceedings brought by the ACCC against Google Inc resulting in a unanimous decision in favour of Google in the High Court of Australia.
