Kaman has extensive experience advising on Australian privacy and data protection requirements – including in relation to personal information, health records, government privacy regimes, tax file numbers, credit reporting, criminal records, direct marketing and surveillance.

He has strong global connections, whether advising foreign clients on Australian issues or drawing on the extended Herbert Smith Freehills network to provide a global service.

Kaman’s expertise in privacy, technology and telecommunications law is highlighted by his listing in Best Lawyers in the field of Privacy and Data Security Law.

His areas of work include big data and data analytics, bring-your-own-device and Wi-Fi programs, and employment privacy. He also works on matters relating to cloud computing, credit reporting, data breaches, direct marketing, health privacy, online services and content, social media and surveillance.

Kaman also advises on related areas – including telecommunications, technology, online services and e-commerce, freedom of information, document retention and confidentiality. This has included matters relating to electronic transactions laws, online payment systems, digital content, credit management and telecommunications interception.

Kaman has written articles on privacy and technology law for Australian and international publications, and presented training workshops on these subjects. 

The Australian Corporate Lawyers Association named Kaman as one of Australia’s best lawyers following a survey of major corporate and government in-house counsel.  

Kaman’s experience includes advising:

  • property managers, retailers, government agencies and a bank  on big data projects, drawing on multiple data sources; 
  • multinational corporate groups on global data transfers, including developing global solutions designed to meet the regulatory requirements of multiple jurisdictions;
  • insurance, IT and logistics providers on dealing with data breach incidents, including risk assessment, remediation, and dealings with forensic investigators, regulators, PR advisers and individuals; and
  • construction, utility, retail and telecommunications companies on regulatory investigations and consultation on law reform.

Background

Kaman graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours). He is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

As well as conducting training workshops on privacy and technology law, Kaman has written articles on these subjects for numerous Australian and international publications.

Kaman was named one of Australia’s best lawyers in a 2010 Australian Corporate Lawyers Association survey of major corporate and government in-house counsel.
