Johanna Lubuma


Johanna is an associate in the Disputes team based in the Johannesburg office



Johanna had a focus on cross border disputes in her LLM and has specific interests in International Investment Law and Arbitrations, International Commercial Arbitrations and World Trade Law.

Johanna has formed part of a team advising and/or acting for:

  • a private hospital group in an arbitration regarding enforceability and performance of a consultancy service agreement;*
  • a water service board in an arbitration against a water service authority;*
  • a telecommunication company in a dispute regarding unfair competition and restraint of trade against a pharmaceutical company and its employees;*
  • financial institutions regarding perfections of securities, general notarial bonds and special notarial bonds; and*
  • general litigation matters such as evictions, actions against sureties or guarantors.*

Johanna began her career at a local Johannesburg firm in January 2017 and joined Herbert Smith Freehills as an associate in January 2022. She is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa. Johanna has experience in commercial litigation and domestic arbitrations.

Johanna is fluent in English and French.

Johanna graduated from King's College London in 2021 with an LLM in International Business Law.

She is part of a team that specialises in various aspects of commercial litigation such as the following:

  • Cross border dispute resolution (specifically in Africa)
  • Arbitrations, mediations and alternative dispute resolution
  • Research and drafting legal opinions
  • General domestic litigation;
  • Corporate crime and investigations
