Helin is an associate specialising in international arbitration and public international law.

Experience

Helin specialises in international commercial and investment arbitration, and public international law. 

She has represented clients in disputes from a range of jurisdictions and sectors, with a focus on the energy and natural resources sector, in international arbitration proceedings under the LCIA, ICC, SIAC, UNCITRAL and ICSID rules.

During her training contract at the firm, Helin spent six months in the Corporate Energy and Infrastructure team, and acted on various infrastructure, power, renewables, and oil and gas projects.  She also spent time on secondment to the Dispute Resolution team of BP plc in London.

She is a member of the Young Institute for Transnational Arbitration, Young International Council for Commercial Arbitration and  Young Public International Law Group.

Helin has a keen interest in climate change disputes, including environment-related investment treaty arbitrations, and environmental sustainability, regularly conducting research and working on projects in these areas.

Helin's experience includes advising:
 

  • Nord Stream 2 AG in an ongoing claim against the European Union under the Energy Charter Treaty. This claim, which relates to the impact of new European Union legislation on a major gas pipeline, is the first investment arbitration brought against the European Union
  • Vedanta Resources on a claim under the UK-India Bilateral Investment Treaty arising from the imposition of retrospective tax by the Indian tax authorities
  • A Middle Eastern solar energy projects developer in LCIA proceedings arising out of the proposed sale of two solar projects under a development agreement
  • An oil & gas supermajor on potential claims against the seller of interests in a gas field arising out of an earn-out clause
  • A leading multinational energy company in ICC proceedings against another leading multinational energy company concerning audit issues and the interpretation of a joint operating agreement
 

Background

Helin completed her LLB and LLM in International Dispute Resolution at King's College London in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

She is fluent in Romanian, German, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
