Gani is a consultant in our dispute resolution practice based in Frankfurt.

Gani focuses his practice on international dispute resolution matters. He has experience representing governments in international investment arbitration cases, international trade law cases, as well as in project financing operations in Kazakhstan and Russia. In Kazakhstan, he extensively practiced corporate law, natural resource law, banking and finance law. 

Gani is listed as an arbitrator in the panels of Shanghai and Tashkent International Arbitration Centers.

Background

Gani studied law at the H.A.Yasawi International Kazakh-Turkish University. He obtained a MA degree in Economics from KIMEP University, LLM from the University of Aberdeen and holds a Doctor of Civil Law degree from McGill University. Prior to joining Herbert Smith Freehills, Gani worked for different organisations and law firms in Kazakhstan. Gani is a Kazakh and Russian native speaker and is fluent in English.

Selected matters

  • represented the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan in international investment arbitration cases and related award enforcement proceedings in foreign courts, advised the Government and state enterprises in international trade cases
  • worked on several infrastructure project financing matters in Kazakhstan and Russia: power plants, development of natural resource deposits, airports, petrochemical plant
  • represented Kazakh banks, state and private corporations in issues of Eurobonds in international capital markets, as well as foreign banks' issues of bonds on Kazakhstan Stock Exchange
  • as CLO of Samruk-Kazyna Group supervised work of legal teams of the Fund and it's major portfolio companies in all major projects of the Samruk-Kazyna Group.
