David is a Senior Associate in our real estate team, based in Perth.

David specialises in various aspects of property law and tenure requirements for both freehold and Crown land, including major infrastructure and development projects, renewable energy projects, sales and acquisitions of commercial and retail assets, major leasing transactions (representing both lessors and lessees), strata developments (including mixed use developments) and other property related commercial transactions, advice and documentation (such as licences, easements and powers of attorney).

David's experience includes advising:

  • advising Lendlease on aspects of the Barangaroo South development in Sydney, which is Australia’s largest urban renewal project since Olympic Park and the Sydney Olympics in 2000, with a value in excess of A$5 billion
  • acting for Chevron on the sale and leasing transaction for Lot 7 at Elizabeth Quay Perth, on which Brookfield Properties will construct a new premium office tower which will become Chevron’s new Perth head-quarters
  • acting for Peet Limited on the development and forward sale of the Lakelands Shopping Centre for circa A$100m, which involved a ‘fund through’ arrangement
  • acting for Growthpoint on its purchase of industrial properties at Perth Airport. This included undertaking a full due diligence of the property, negotiating the sale contract, advising on relevant matters under the Airports Act 1996 (Cth) and completing settlement
  • acting for Woodside Energy on the agreement for lease and lease for its new head office in Perth comprising a new approximately 55,000 square metre office building at Capital Square
  • assisting Charter Hall with various leasing matters in relation to the Raine Square redevelopment, being a mixed use commercial and retail precinct in the Perth CBD. David also acted for Charter Hall on its acquisition of the Raine Square development in 2013

  • acting for APA Group on tenure aspects of the construction of a gas pipeline and power station to supply energy to the Gruyere Gold Project in Western Australia. This work included advising on appropriate tenure options for the pipeline and power station (including from a “bankability” perspective and covering tenure options available under the Mining Act 1978 (WA)) and negotiating relevant tenure documents with the joint venture parties developing the Gruyere Gold Project
  • acting for Western Power on the sale of surplus land assets, including the preparation and negotiation of sale contracts and settlement related matters
  • acting for Synergy in relation to property and tenure aspects of solar and wind energy projects
  • acting for Covalent Lithium in relation to an Option Deed granted by DevelopmentWA to WA Lithium for a lithium refinery and processing facility at Kwinana, Western Australia

 

Background

David graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2008 with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce. David commenced his legal career in early 2009 at another major international law firm and joined the Herbert Smith Freehills real estate team in 2011.
