Arpen has a wealth of experience in advising both (re)insurers and policyholders on complex, multi-jurisdictional coverage disputes.
He has a focus on insurance issues arising in the banking, political risk and energy sectors (in particular, oil and gas). He has also defended clients in professional negligence claims. His expertise covers both litigation and ADR, guiding clients through difficult legal issues to a commercial solution.
Arpen also has experience in advising clients with global operations on competition and regulatory issues within the insurance market.
Arpen also advises on the W&I insurance aspects of M&A deals and the insurance requirements of large scale project finance matters.
Arpen's recent experience include advising:
- a joint-venture of seven of the world's largest oil and gas companies in a complex US $800mn reinsurance WELCAR coverage dispute following a complete pipeline failure in the Caspian Sea
- one of the world's largest insurance brokers in relation to an ongoing high-profile competition and regulatory investigation by numerous authorities including the European Commission
- insurers in an international arbitration concerning a $900mn political risk insurance dispute in Russia, with a US venture capitalist. *This experience was gained prior to joining HSF
- London market insurers in a coverage dispute concerning one of Norway's largest mis-selling scandals by a financial services group. * This experience was gained prior to joining HSF
