Alistair advises clients on a wide range of tax matters in the context of mergers and acquisitions, projects and disputes across various industry sectors including infrastructure, resources and financial services.

Alistair also has litigation experience, including assisting clients in proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia regarding appeals against amended assessments issued by the ATO.

Alistair's experience includes advising:
 

  • NAB on its $1.8b acquisition of Citigroup's Australian consumer banking business
  • SunSuper (i.e. Australian Retirement Trust) on the $18b takeover of AusNet Services Limited
  • Westpac on its proposed demerger of its $10b New Zealand banking operations
  • Scentre Group in relation to the issue of US $3b subordinated hybrid notes
  • Ampol Limited in relation to the issue of AUD $500m subordinated hybrid notes
  • Resolution Life on the $3b acquisition of AMP Life
  • PFD Food Services regarding a $552m strategic investment by Woolworths Group for a 65% interest
  • multiple large privatised infrastructure assets in relation to ATO audit activities and settlement discussions
  • a top-tier Australian investment bank in relation to strategic debt financing
  • various institutional investors including Canadian pension funds on the holding of Australian investments, including in relation to the availability of targeted tax concessions for foreign pension funds and sovereign wealth funds.

In 2020, Alistair was listed in the Doyle’s Guide in the ‘Tax Law Rising Star’ category for Australia. In 2019, Alistair was a finalist in the 'Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 Awards' (Taxation category) and The Tax Institute's 'Tax Adviser of the Year Awards' (Emerging Tax Star category).

Background

Alistair holds a Master of Laws, Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Melbourne. Alistair is a solicitor admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia.

Alistair is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) member of The Tax Institute and member of the Law Institute of Victoria.
