Herbert Smith Freehills’ outstanding client service and commitment to creating a positive culture for its people has been recognised at the annual Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards, where the firm picked up three prestigious accolades.

The firm won the following awards:

  • Dealmaker of the Year (Philippa Stone)
  • Intellectual Property Team of the Year
  • Employee Program of the Year (for its employee mindfulness initiative)

Sue Gilchrist, Regional Managing Partner, Asia and Australia said: “It is an honour to receive these awards, which reflect the firm’s success in providing an exceptional experience for our clients and our people. I would like to express my gratitude to our clients for entrusting us with their most significant and market-defining matters, and thank the firm’s partners, lawyers and support staff, all of whom have contributed to our success.”

Philippa Stone, a senior partner in the firm’s market-leading corporate practice, won the Dealmaker of the Year award for her expertise in equity capital markets and M&A transactions. Philippa is regularly recognised as a leader in the field and this is the second consecutive year that she has won the coveted award.

“As a firm we strive to provide clients with outstanding expertise and recognise that in order to do so we must foster a high performance, collaborative, diverse and inclusive culture. This is a clear objective of the firm, underpinned by our recently-refreshed global vision and strategy,” Sue said.

“In a profession well known as having a high incidence of mental health issues, providing our people with practical ways to protect and improve their mental health and work practices is an important priority.

“Mindfulness has formed a part of our leadership programs for over ten years, and more recently we  made mindfulness workshops and online tools available to all Australian staff. This innovation has delivered immense benefits to our people including improved focus, better stress management and greater efficiency, all of which has added value to our clients. We are also pleased to have worked with a number of our clients to help them provide mindfulness training to their teams.”

Herbert Smith Freehills’ Intellectual Property team is consistently recognised as a market-leader for commercially critical, high-stakes matters and disputes in Australia and internationally. The team has an impressive track record, having acted in most of the key patent cases in recent years as well as advising on many high profile IP commercial transactions.

The 16th annual Australian Law Awards were held in Sydney on 2 September 2016.
