Shanghai partner Nanda Lau has been named Herbert Smith Freehills’ new head of the firm’s China corporate practice, effective 1 May 2021.

She replaces Hong Kong partner Matt Emsley, who is now managing partner of the firm’s China operations.

Nanda has been based in Shanghai since 2005, and has led the firm’s office there since 2016. An experienced corporate partner, she advises on China-related cross-border M&A and corporate transactions.

“Nanda is a natural choice for this role, with an admired market reputation amongst our clients and proven success in leadership within the firm,” said Asia Managing Partner May Tai.

“China is an important market for our local and global clients and for our firm, and I am confident that the practice will continue to thrive under her watch.”

The firm’s China corporate practice operates from offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai, advising clients on corporate, M&A and investments, and capital markets transactions.

With expertise in energy, TMT, consumer goods and pharma work, it also offers in-depth headquarters advisory advice on regulatory, ESG and compliance.

“Our capabilities in China were boosted by the launch of our joint operation with Kewei Law Firm in 2019, enabling us to provide seamless access to PRC law,” said Asia Head of Corporate Graeme Preston.

”Nanda’s role in the joint operation’s development, launch and its subsequent success makes her ideal for this role.”
