Herbert Smith Freehills has advised Total Eren in respect of their development of the 256MWp Stage 1 of the Kiamal Solar Farm in Victoria.

Yesterday The Hon Lily D’Ambrosio, MP, Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change officially announced the commencement of construction of what will be the largest solar project in Victoria when completed.

Kiamal Stage 1 is located near Ouyen, approximately 100km south of Mildura, and will be constructed by Biosar Australia and Canadian Solar Australia (in joint venture). In addition to being the largest solar project in Victoria once complete, the project also has a unique offtake structure comprising a number of first-in-market power renewable purchase arrangements, including long-term contracts with Alinta, Flow Power and Mars Australia.

The Herbert Smith Freehills team was led by partner Gerard Pike along with Alison Dodd, Peter Davis and Jon Evans and senior associates David Ong and Nadine Kilpatrick.

Mr Pike said, “It is terrific that construction has now commenced on this landmark solar project for Victoria. Kiamal Stage 1 is the outcome of several years of dedication and hard work by the Total Eren team.”

“The grid connection and offtake arrangements for Kiamal are unique and ground-breaking in the Australian market. The HSF team has really enjoyed working with Total Eren to navigate the legal challenges necessary to achieve this milestone ”

This deal is another example of Herbert Smith Freehills’ market-leading work advising on large-scale solar projects in Australia, including having recently advised in relation to the Haughton Solar Project in Queensland, the Swan Hill Solar Project in Victoria, the Ross River Solar Project in Queensland, the Lilyvale Solar project in Queensland and the Beryl Solar Farm in New South Wales.
