Herbert Smith Freehills has been recognised in four high-profile categories at The American Lawyer's Global Legal Awards 2017.

The event, which was hosted last night (25 September, 2017) in New York, showcased the firm's work on the dispute around the collapse of the Nortel Networks Group. The firm's work on this matter was honoured with two prizes: Global Dispute of the Year: Transnational Litigation; and overall of American Lawyer's Global Dispute of the Year award.

The firm achieved a favourable settlement for EY in the long-running global insolvency of the Nortel Networks companies, based in Europe. This dispute was described by Hon. Warren Winkler, the former Chief Justice of Ontario, as "one of the most complex trans-national legal proceedings in history".

Herbert Smith Freehills was also selected as winners of the Global M&A Deal of the Year (US) prize, for its work advising long-standing client British American Tobacco (BAT) on its acquisition of Reynolds – subsequently creating the world’s largest listed tobacco company by sales.

The firm also walked away with the Global Finance Deal of the Year: Insolvency and Restructuring (UK) prize, for its work advising the co-ordinating committee of secured lenders on the restructuring of EnQuest PLC - the largest independent UK oil producer in the North Sea.

Now in its fifth year, The American Lawyer Awards honours the most important and creative cross-border work of the year in citizenship/pro bono, disputes, finance and mergers and acquisitions. New York Partners Joseph Falcone and James Robinson were at the event in Manhattan to collect the prizes.
