Herbert Smith Freehills has advised the State of Tasmania on a new contract for Healthscope Limited to operate Hobart Private Hospital for a further 20 years.

The deal, signed on 11 December, is a high-profile one for Tasmania and cements a 20 year partnership between the State and Healthscope in relation to co-located service delivery between the Royal Hobart and Hobart Private co-located hospitals, and the integration of the full range of public and private hospital services for the people of Tasmania from the State's flagship health campus.

The Hobart Private Hospital directly employs over 550 people and draws on the expertise of more than 350 consulting doctors. Each year on average, the Hospital treats over 23,500 patients and undertakes 14,000 procedures. Close coordination between the Royal Hobart and Hobart Private Hospitals is integral to ensuring services are well coordinated and that theTasmanian people receive the best possible clinical care. This renewed partnership enshrines that coordination.

The Herbert Smith Freehills team was led by Partner David Hugo, Senior Associates Katie Brennan and Sam Cooper and solicitor Breanna O’Reilly with instruction from the Tasmanian Crown Solicitors Office and Tasmanian Department of Health.

Mr Hugo said, “We were privileged to be able to assist the State of Tasmania with what was a complex and ground-breaking deal in many aspects, and one which will have very real and immediate benefits for the people of Tasmania.”

Herbert Smith Freehills worked closely with an advisory team from Paxon Group, led by Michael Palassis, for the commercial aspects of the deal. Healthscope was represented by a Gilbert & Tobin team led by Alex Danne.
