Tokyo: Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has advised longstanding client Mitsui & Co., Ltd. on its acquisition of an approximately US$101 million interest in healthcare provider International Columbia U.S. LLC (ICU), the holding company of Columbia Asia Healthcare Sdn. Bhd. and Columbia Asia Hospitals Private Limited (collectively Columbia Asia).

Columbia Asia is one of the region's largest hospital groups with 27 hospitals and a clinic in Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. 

Through the investment in Columbia Asia, Mitsui will expand its hospital business and promote the establishment of a healthcare network that covers a broad range of preventive and prognostic services through mutual partnerships between IHH, MIMS Group and DaVita Care. 

Herbert Smith Freehills has advised Mitsui on a number of international acquisitions, including recently interests in Norway's Hexagon Composites ASA, international education consulting company QS Quacquarelli Symonds and forestry investment manager New Forests.

The Herbert Smith Freehills team in Tokyo was led by corporate partner Graeme Preston and senior associate Andy Young, with assistance from senior associate James Willis, associates Richard Taylor and Nishita Vasan, and trainee solicitor Adam Ford. 

Tokyo partner Lex Papasolomontos and associate Elisa Hayashi assisted on competition aspects of the transaction.
