Eric Fiszelson, partner at Herbert Smith Freehills, has teamed up with an international group of law students that was awarded 'Best Presentation' at the recent LawWithoutWalls (LWOW) 2018 competition in Miami.

LawWithoutWalls is a unique programme that brings together 100 students from over 30 international law and business schools. They are split into small teams and, under the guidance of academic, business, entrepreneur and legal mentors, are challenged to produce a business solution and technological prototype for a problem related to law on a global scale.

Over a period of four months, the team of three law students mentored by Eric focused on how lawyers could best assist with the reintegration and access to legal information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youngsters in Australia.

Their business solution consisted of an app called Kite, downloadable to smartphones of indigenous young people held under court orders, which offers them access to a network of legal and social sector professionals who can help them to better observe their court sanctions or bail conditions. One of Kite's primary aims is to create a virtual support community that not only benefits these youngsters being held under court orders, but also their lawyers and the social workers that assist them.

"Kite is a fantastic tool that proves that innovation is the future of law", commented Eric Fiszelson. "We firmly believe in the inclusive ideology of the business proposal put forward by these students, who have worked tirelessly to develop this solution based around the strength of community spirit and communication", he added.
