Partner Dongho Lee, Herbert Smith Freehills' first Korean partner, has been appointed to lead the firm's Seoul office.
He takes over the role from founding partner Lewis McDonald who established the firm's Seoul office in 2013, and will work alongside Chief Representative and partner Mike McClure in leading a team of 15 lawyers and staff in Seoul.
"In just over four years, Lewis, Dongho and their team have built our Seoul practice into one of the largest foreign law firms in the country," said Justin D'Agostino, Managing Partner, Asia and Australia.
"We launched with strong disputes, energy and corporate practitioners on the ground in South Korea and this strategy has proved popular with international and Korean clients alike."
"Dongho's appointment first to partner in 2016 and now as Seoul managing partner reflects our strategy to support and promote our Korean lawyers. He is an excellent lawyer and a fantastic role model, and I look forward to working with him to develop our Seoul practice even further."
Lewis was appointed to lead the firm's Asia corporate practice in October 2016, a cross-regional role with responsibility for over 20 partners across nine offices in Asia. Once regulatory approvals are in place, he will relocate to our Tokyo office to continue his practice advising Korean and Japanese companies.
Dongho Lee advises clients on cross-border M&A transactions and private equity investments, including complex, multijurisdictional corporate transactions on behalf of Korean and global clients. Prior to joining Herbert Smith Freehills, Dongho worked at other global law firms and a major Korean law firm. He graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in economics, and received a JD from Georgetown University Law Center. Dongho is admitted in all courts of New York as an attorney and counsellor at law.
