Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has advised Macquarie Capital Limited and China Merchants Securities (HK) Co., Limited as joint sponsors of Cathay Media and Education Group Inc.’s mainboard listing on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.

Cathay Media and Education Group is one of the pioneers in the private TV programme production industry in China. It operates the Communication University of China, Nanjing, which was ranked first in independent media and arts colleges in China in 2020.

Against the ongoing disruption caused by the pandemic, the company raised approximately HK$1.24 billion, with the listing on 15 July 2020.

Cathay Media and Education Group attracted four cornerstone investors including Orchid Asia, Snow Lake Funds, Foresight Orient Global Superior Choice SPC and Oceanic.

"We are delighted to have worked with Macquarie Capital Limited and China Merchants Securities on this IPO,” said Hong Kong partner Matt Emsley. “The resilient capital market continues to provide companies with welcome opportunities to reinvigorate their capital base after the pandemic.”

"Cathay Media and Education Group is the second education offering on which we have advised in recent months,” said Singapore partner Siddhartha Sivaramakrishnan, who advised on US securities law aspects of the offering. "Promising education listings continue to be attractive to the market due to their growing competitive and market potential.”

"This is the fifth Hong Kong IPO in which Herbert Smith Freehills Kewei joint operation office has assisted since establishment almost one year ago,” said Herbert Smith Freehills Kewei joint operation partner Stanley Xie. “We congratulate our clients on their continued success, and look forward to offering even more innovative and efficient legal solutions in the future.”
