Herbert Smith Freehills Partner Kirsten Massey has been showcased in The Lawyer's Hot 100 2018 report – a list which gathers together the most notable lawyers in the industry who are making stand-out contributions in their field.

Listed in this year's report, Kirsten has just successfully achieved an historic settlement for RBS in the landmark shareholder rights issue litigation, which saw nearly 40,000 shareholders issue proceedings against the bank seeking damages of around £4 billion.

Joining Herbert Smith Freehills in 2004 and becoming a Partner in 2009, Kirsten was also part of a team that achieved a successful victory for Chevron, in one of the largest pieces of commercial litigation ever seen in the UK, which found Total to liable for the 2005 Buncefield explosion.

She has also acted on various other landmark cases including:

  • for Phoenix Venture Holdings and other companies in the MG Rover Group, along with directors and officers of companies in the Group including the "Phoenix Four" in relation to the long running investigation by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills into the collapse of the car company; and
  • representing the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), in relation to large scale High Court litigation following the collapse of Keydata Investment Services Limited.
