Herbert Smith Freehills proud to be supporting the new Solar Energy Standardisation Initiative aimed at spurring global solar development by standardising contracts to streamline the development and finance of solar projects.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Terrawatt Initiative (TWI - a global private sector non-profit organisation, led by Engie and launched at COP21) recently announced the launch of a global effort to standardise contracts in order to streamline the development and financing of solar projects to attract around USD1.2 trillion of private capital by 2030. The Initiative will bring together public and private sector stakeholders to define and agree on a standard template for solar project documents that are effective and acceptable by finance institutions.

Herbert Smith Freehills will be providing legal expertise (on a pro bono basis), in collaboration with other legal consultants. Leading on the project within the firm is Paris energy and infrastructure partner Leïla Hubeaut, assisted by Ergen Ege.

Leïla commented:

"We are extremely proud to be part of this fantastic initiative and provide exceptional legal services to help the development of solar projects across the globe. Herbert Smith Freehills has always had a strong pro bono culture and being able to combine this with our expert knowledge in renewables is a great opportunity."

The initiative aims to share templates and standard documentation by COP 22 in Marrakesh this November.
