Our Melbourne office traces its history to 1853 when the original partnership was formed in Melbourne.

We have been part of the Melbourne commercial community ever since. We incorporated and floated BHP in 1885 and are proud to say that we continue to act for BHP today.

As one of the largest offices in the Herbert Smith Freehills network, we provide a full-service legal offering to our clients across all major sectors.

Alternative Legal Services (ALT) launched a team in Melbourne in November 2016 – the first team of its kind in Australia. The team comprises qualified lawyers, legal analysts and eDiscovery specialists; all working closely with their counterparts across ALT's global network to provide a seamless, round-the-clock service to clients.

We look to our Client Charter, together with our Firm Values, to guide our decisions and ways of working. Our Client Charter will inspire us, guide us, and remind us of what we need to do every day.

The Melbourne office is a leader in workplace diversity and inclusion, with networks and programmes for LGBTI inclusion, women in business, helping parents return to work and the promotion of cultural diversity.

We have a long history of pro bono support for worthy organisations and encourage staff members to volunteer in the community.
