Herbert Smith Freehills has been recognised with the highest badge of honour awarded to organisations by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The firm has today been granted the Gold Award in the 2021 Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, highlighting Herbert Smith Freehills "outstanding support towards the Armed Forces community".

One of only three law firms to receive the award this year, it comes in recognition of Herbert Smith Freehills' efforts to ensure organisations across all industry sectors offer support to those who serve, as well as Veterans and their families. To win the Gold Award the firm also had to demonstrate HR policies supporting Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers in their efforts to serve.

In achieving its second award in less than 12 months from the UK Ministry of Defence, Herbert Smith Freehills was also commended for its recognition that Veterans and Reservists offer knowledge and transferrable skills that are as relevant in 'Civvy Street' as they are in military situations.

"Transitioning from a military role to a civilian environment is not easy, so it's great to be recognised for doing our bit. The skills learned in the Armed Forces are referred to as lifelong learning for a reason and we are proud that our ongoing commitment to former and serving personnel has been recognised with such a prestigious award." says Haig Tyler, Chief Information Officer at Herbert Smith Freehills and a former Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force.

Leo Docherty, Minister for Defence People and Veterans says: "I would like to thank all the organisations who have proven their support for the Defence community during such unprecedented and challenging times. The vast range of those recognised this year demonstrates how employing the Armed Forces community makes a truly positive and beneficial impact for all employers, regardless of size, sector or location."

The Employer Recognition Scheme was launched in 2014 by then Prime Minister, David Cameron, to recognise employer support for the wider principles of the Defence Armed Forces Covenant and the full spectrum of Defence personnel.
