Experience

Ike has spent over 30 years advising clients on all aspects of trade marks and leads Herbert Smith Freehill’s dedicated trade mark team in Australia. His experience covers the full lifecycle of trade marks from creation and clearance, registration, commercialisation, through to enforcement and dispute resolution. Ike has significant experience in valuing IP and using IP as a commercial asset. He advises clients across the consumer products, banking, energy, manufacturing, travel and hospitality sectors on trade mark registration and prosecution, trade mark portfolio management, and clearance work for advertising and promotional campaigns.

His experience includes advising:

  • Commonwealth Bank of Australia on the management of its trade mark portfolio comprising over 550 trade marks across Australia, Asia, Europe and USA
  • Treasury Wine Estates on regular policing of international trade mark watches and ELISS wine label database searches for their brands including Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Seppelt and Pepperjack
  • Iluka Resources on the management of over 200 trade marks across 49 countries and providing strategic branding and clearance advice across multiple jurisdictions in connection with the demerger of Deterra Royalties
  • Qantas, Australia’s largest domestic and international airline, on the management of its portfolio of 1,100 trade marks across 60 countries
  • Ampol and Worley on major international rebrands
  • Caterpillar Inc on trade mark opposition proceedings in the Court of Appeal

 

Background

Ike holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of South Africa, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Bachelor of Administration from the University of Pretoria. He is qualified to practise in England and Wales, South Africa and Australia.

Before joining Freehills in 2006, Ike spent 18 years as a partner in a leading South African intellectual property firm.
