Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has hired senior associate Joel Rheuben in Tokyo, further bolstering its competition and antitrust capabilities on the ground in Japan.

Specialising in the transactional aspects of competition law and foreign investment regulation, Joel offers a unique combination of international experience and local understanding of the competition challenges facing Japanese businesses.

Joel will work closely with Japan Head of Corporate Graeme Preston, EU/UK competition law specialist and Brussels Managing Partner Kyriakos Fountoukakos, and our global team of M&A and competition law specialists.

"Japanese companies are increasingly active in cross-border investments, and subject to an ever-increasing range of competition and regulatory controls," said Graeme. "Joel's experience and presence in Japan will support our clients on these business-critical competition matters."

ABOUT JOEL

Joel holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Sydney and a Masters of Laws from the University of Tokyo. He is admitted to practice in New South Wales, Australia and as a solicitor in England and Wales. 

Fluent in Japanese, Joel has worked in Japan, Belgium, the UK and Australia, supporting Japanese and international clients.
