Kyriakos Fountoukakos

Managing Partner

Kyriakos is a partner and deals with all aspects of European Union and United Kingdom competition law.



He was formerly a European Commission official at the Directorate General for Competition’s Merger Task Force and a Référendaire (legal assistant) in the cabinet of the President of the General Court of the EU. Kyriakos’s clients value his understanding of economic issues, and his insider knowledge gained at the European Commission and at the General Court.

Kyriakos advises international clients in sectors including consumer products, energy, financial services and insurance, manufacturing, media, rail and air transport, telecommunications and information technology, and pharmaceuticals on a range of areas including merger control (mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures), cartels, antitrust investigations and advice, distribution agreements, dominance, and competition litigation before the EU courts. 

He is acknowledged as a leading competition law expert in major legal directories including Chambers and Partners and the International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists. Kyriakos is fluent in English, Greek and French.


  • BSkyB on obtaining EU merger control clearance in the context of a potential bid by News Corporation
  • Arriva plc on obtaining EU merger clearance for the recommended £1.585 billion takeover offer from Deutsche Bahn AG
  • Pilkington on the European Commission’s investigations into alleged cartel conduct in the European flat and automotive glass sectors and on its appeal of the car-glass decision to the General Court of the EU
  • a large UK financial institution as an intervener before the General Court of the EU in the proceedings lodged by MasterCard against the Commission’s decisions on multilateral interchange fees
  • a financial institution in an investigation by the EC into possible anti-competitive practices concerning the setting of LIBOR/TIBOR rates


Kyriakos studied law and European studies at the University of Athens (LLB), King’s College London (LLM), University of Cambridge (MPhil in European Studies) and Columbia Law School, New York (LLM). He is qualified to practise in Greece and as a solicitor in England and Wales.
