Leading Indonesian law firm Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung has advised Finland’s state-owned power company Fortum Power and Heat Oy on its power purchase agreement (PPA) for a US$360 million waste-to-energy plant in Sunter, near Jakarta.

Fortum and city-owned PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) have formed a joint venture company to establish Indonesia’s first waste-to-energy power plant. The plant is expected to provide 35 megawatts of power by processing 2,200 tons of garbage daily when it comes online in 2022.

The ground-breaking ceremony and signing of the PPA for the project took place on 16 October 2019.

"We are delighted to have advised Fortum on this transaction, having worked closely with them on this project since 2017," said Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung partner Dhani Maulana Pattinggi.

"The Sunter project is expected to be the first of several new waste-to-energy plants built in Indonesia over the next five years," said senior international counsel Matthew Goerke. "The plan allows the Indonesian Government to resolve the country’s waste management issues while also increasing investment in new and renewable energy."

Dhani and Matthew led the team advising Fortum, assisted by associates Andrew Gadd and Aditya Rachman.
