In celebration of Earth Day 2021, the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations has shared its final suggested Framework and six associated Protocols to promote better environmental behaviours in the international arbitration community.
Following the Public Consultation Draft launch in January, the Campaign’s Steering Committee met with members of the international arbitration community worldwide. After introducing the Protocols through a pair of successful global events attended by more than 300 registrants, the Campaign hosted a series of curated regional roundtables (virtually) in Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, the Middle East and North America. Through these events invaluable feedback was collected regarding the content of the Protocols and the feasibility of application in different parts of the world. The community's comments were overwhelmingly positive and confirmed the global acknowledgement of the need to reduce our carbon emissions.
Additionally, the campaign received written feedback from individual community members and several detailed comment reports from supporting organisations.
The Protocols Drafting Working Group, of which London-based Senior Associate Maguelonne de Brugiere is a member, reviewed and implemented the comments. Some feedback has been reserved for integration into upcoming Campaign initiatives.
The Steering Committee, in conjunction with newly formed Regional Sub-Committees of the Campaign, with London-based Associate Helin Laufer co-heading the Europe Sub-Committee, are designed to implement the Green Protocols in each region of the world with particular attention to regional specificities, and will concentrate in the coming year on implementation efforts. These bodies will focus on providing tools, instructions, support, and resources to members of the international arbitration community in order to enable them to implement the Green Protocols practically and effectively.
